As we recently noted, Glenn Donaldson's The Reds, Pinks & Purples have more new music coming this month. We featured two of the tracks in early February (our feature here), and tonight we have the special treat of the title track -- "The Town That Cursed Your Name". It is a smashing tune with a triumphant vibe of resilience and steadfast devotion to your spirit despite obstacles. Once again, Glenn hits the emotional bullseye.

"Arboretum Miles" / "Estates of Sparking Haze" by Laughing Chimes

 

As we wrote in our last post, today is full of jangle with a San Francisco flavor at WYMA World Headquarters. While Laughing Chimes aren't San Francisco residents, the Athens, Ohio band is on the roster of Bay Area's Slumberland Records, and their new single has a full dose of jangle and chime. The two-song release is "Arboretum Miles" / "Estates of Sparking Haze", and follows closely the band's debut EP from last November (our feature here).

This new single further confirms the grasp songwriters Evan and Quinn Seurkamp have on the sound of classic jangle pop of the '80s and '90s, and a bit of British Invasion as well, despite all of that happening before they were born. Thematically, youthful hopes and yearnings and washes of melancholy are timeless and, when done as well as this, quite affecting.

The record is out now as a digital release via Slumberland Records.

"Coming to Your Town" by Chime School

 

Today at WYMA is a mostly jangle day, and a San Francisco day as well. First up is the new two-track single by Chime School, the Rickenbacker-driven project founded by Andy Pastalaniec (Seablite/Cruel Summer). The band's self-titled album from 2021 impressed us greatly (our feature here), so we were eager to learn what new treats we coming. We listened, and were weren't disappointed. The A-side is "Coming to Your Town", a more muscular jangler addressing the reactionary turn of some San Francisco citizens during the pandemic. The B-side is a jangling version of Buzzcock's "Love You More". And in our view, covers of Buzzcocks are always encouraged. 

The release date for the record is scheduled for April 7, and will be out via Slumberland Records (North America), Meritorio Records (Europe) and Fastcut Records (Japan)..

"Family Tree" / "Love is a Petal" - Captain Starlet

 

Offering a fresh, energetic and tuneful take on powerpop, York, UK's Captain Starlet makes a big impression on WYMA with their new single "Family Tree" / "Love is a Petal". How can we not be happy listening to music played by a band that really, really sounds like they are enjoying what they are doing, and also do it very well.

Captain Starlet are Tom Carroll (guitar/vocals), Sam Festenstein (bass), Cameron Baker (drums), and Ethan Carroll (guitar). This single is out today via UK label Safe Suburban Home.

As indie fans, you are well aware of how difficult it can be to find the best of the working artists. As people highly paid to find new music, we feel your pain. And that's why we owe a boatload of thanks (and perhaps a record purchase) to Prefect Records. The Hartlepool, UK label has collected 14 gems from among the best indie projects and bundled them into the appropriately titled 14. While some of the bands were known to us, many of them were new. All of the songs are excellent.

As always, we wanted to give you our favorite tracks without embedding the whole album. But as we played through the list we realized that we were marking every track. Yes, every single track. So don't take the list as a 'best of', take it as 'oh my God, there is more of this'. Then dive in.

The Happy Somethings - A Gathering of All Sorts

 

Classic DIY indie pop with no gimmicks but plenty of inspiration and spirit. Oh, and a welcome dose of humor as well. We are talking about A Gathering of All Sorts by UK band The Happy Somethings. The trio from the East Midlands of the UK gathered this collection from new songs and reworked old songs. To our ears, it is all fresh, melodic an irrepressibly upbeat. For our gray and rainy Thursday, this was an ideal choice to get us through the day.

"You" by Lachlan Denton

 

We truthfully cannot think of a better mid-week mood lift than the upbeat and sweet "You" by Melbourne artist Lachlan Denton (The Ocean Party/Pop Filter/Partner Look/and others). The song follows "Lose" the debut single from his upcoming album Furnishings (our feature of "Lose" here). We have long admired Lach's craft, yet we are nevertheless struck by quality of "You" and "Lose". The clarity of expression and completeness of the arrangements are top class, and suggest that the album will be an instant favorite.

En Attendant Ana - Principia

 

Intriguing with their early releases, French band En Attendant Ana has continued to grow into a compelling artist. Their latest LP, the newly released Principia, showcases their dynamic and propulsive arrangements as a carrying vehicle for Margaux Bouchaudon's coolly incisive and self-reflective vocals. If the listener focuses solely on the vocals, the vibe is classic -- and almost glossy pop -- of a very high quality. But the forward push of the metronomic rhythm section, keys, sax and other instruments combine with the vocals to provide a vibrant and distinctive set of music.

The Telephone Numbers - Weird Sisters 7"

 After a week of visitors we are back to bring you news of quality indie music. We begin with the pop perfection of Weird Sisters, a two-track single by The Telephone Numbers. The project of San Francisco songwriter Thomas Rubenstein (whose terrific Ballad of Doug LP wowed us), it brings you the best of the two sides of jangling indie -- blissful and sunny on side A, and bittersweet and melancholy on side B. Great stuff, so dig in!

"You Look Right Through Me" and "Resolution (Happy New Year!)" by The Plus 4

 

This could be one of many readers' favorite posts in a long time. Why? 1. Because it introduces them to a great new band; and 2. We don't know enough about the band to bore everyone. What we do know is that the name of the band is The Plus 4, and they are based in the UK. Their sound is an appealing '60s throwback, and .... well, that's all we know.

The Plus 4 have released two singles so far in 2023, and we have been lucky enough to hear a third which will be coming soon. For now, you will have to be satisfied with "Your Look Right Through Me" and "Resolution (Happy New Year!)".

Blues Lawyer - All In Good Time

 

It seems to us that the members of Bay Area band Blues Lawyer, when faced with choices ranging from melodic, hooky pop to punky rock, checked the "all of the above" box. Ambitious? Sure. Cocky? Maybe. But there is no doubt in our minds that on All In Good Time they killed it. The hooks and melodies bounce around happily in your noggin while the drums and bass feel like they are living inside your chest. This is what good rock music should feel like. And with 14 tracks, no one can complain about the value proposition here. Every song make a case for being your favorite. Fortunately, you don't have to choose.  We previously covered album tracks "Nowhere to Go" and "Chance Encounters", and while they are highlight tracks we think you deserve a broader dive into the noisy buffet. We selected a few of our favorites, but truthfully we could have thrown darts blindfolded (however, after the last time we did that our insurance broker had a word with us -- we shouldn't have left the window open).

"I Wasn't Thinking At All" by Cold Irons Bound

 

Today's first featured tune is "I Wasn't Thinking At All" by Melbourne's Cold Irons Band. The four-piece has an appealing sound based in scrappy power pop with '90s distortion and an Americana vibe, and this song features both their rocking and Americana bona fides. We also should mention that our spouses endorse the notion that we at WYMA feature a song titled "I Wasn't Thinking At All". We aren't sure what they are hinting, but I'm sure it is loving and supportive.

The single is out now via Golden Robot Records. It is taken from the upcoming LP No Place I Can't Find You.

Cherry Fez - Honeycomb Tearoom

 

As we reach the end of the week a bit of jangling guitar pop is just what our ears demanded. And what our ears want, our ears get (well, excluding food, sex toys and large objects of course). Our dose of jangle comes courtesy of Todd Shuster (late of The Impossible Years) who, with the assistance of drummer Mark Hayner and recording as Cherry Fez, has gifted the world with Honeycomb Tearoom. It is great stuff with ten track delivering upbeat tunes and a few slow-burners. It is available for 'name your price' on Bandcamp so you have no excuse not to drop some coin on Cherry Fez and walk into the Honeycomb Tearoom. "Velvet Lovers" by Nate Wey and the Dreamers

 We've been awol for a few days (work/illness/skiing), so we thought we would celebrate our return with a thoroughly delicious free song titled "Velvet Lovers" by Portland, Oregon's Nate Wey and the Dreamers. The song is a mash up of Velvet Underground's Waiting for The Man and The Modern Lover's Roadrunner. So the songwriting credit belongs to Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman. But Nate gets the inspiration credit for the mash up. And lets not forget a round of applause for the Dreamers: Tobias Berblinger (keys), Christa Buckland (backing vocals), Kyle Cregan (drums), Leah Heuser (backing vocals), Sarah Nienaber (electric guitars). Nate provided vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, and keys. In addition to being a musician, he also is a sound mixer and composer.

Dignan Porch - Electric Threads

When we last covered Dignan Porch they were camped out in South London. Since then main man Joe Walsh has moved to Manchester. But he still is writing music and thank the gods for that! His songs appear to have roots in '60s garage and folk rock, rinsed with psychedelia and jangle. It manages to simultaneously sound mysterious and innocent. And while it certainly isn't music aiming for the bullseye of any commercial channel, it is timeless music superbly crafted. We are going to be playing it for a long, long time.

Joe Walsh wrote, sang, and preformed most of the instruments on Electric Threads, although his brother Sam contributed as well. Electric Threads is out now in vinyl and digital formats via Hidden Bay Records (France), Safe Suburban Home (UK), and Repeating Cloud (US).

"I Hear Music" by The Sprouts

Today's first featured single is "I Hear Music" by The Sprouts. Note that these The Sprouts are not The Sprouts from Vancouver, British Columbia, but a newer project from Melbourne. And while the band is new to us, the members hail from such Australian worthies as Chook Race, Dippers (fka Thigh Master), Permits and Ill Globo, some of which have featured here in the past. While such familiarity preconditioned us to like the music, we think the tune is worthy all by itself. It chugs along in shaggy, earworm style and then gives us some shredding electric guitar to close. We like surprises!

The Sprouts are Rob Remedios, Innez Tulloch, Tom Marinelli and Matthew Ford. Eat Your Greens will be out March 24 via Tenth Court.

"Ways to Wear My Hair" by Mannone Alone

 

Let's begin the week with some sparkling indie pop, shall we? The artist is Mark Mannone, whose solo post-The Lucksmiths project is (almost) aptly titled Mannone Alone. We say "almost" because for this single Mark called on Joe Foley, Gus Franklin, and Louis Richter to flesh out "Ways to Wear My Hair". And a song this fine begs a question: Isn't 2023 time for another Mannone Alone LP? We certainly hope so. Meanwhile, enjoy a fine song, and presumable some hairstyle advice.

"Ways to Wear My Hair" is out via Melbourne's Lost and Lonesome Records, with a vinyl available via Finland's Royal Mint Records.

For indie music fans, we have had a good start to the year. And it going to get even better. How do we know? The Reds, Pinks & Purples have a new LP coming this spring. The first tracks available are "Too Late for an Early Grave" and "Life in the Void". It won't shock you to learn that we love the songs and very much look forward to the album. The album is called The Town That Cursed Your Name, and the songwriter helming the project advises that it is about trying to live while feeling compelled to make music.

John McCabe - Somehow Or Another (2017​-​2022 EPs and singles compilation)

 

With 26 songs and a range that encompasses Americana, alt country, indie rock and jangle, Somehow Or Another (2017​-​2022 EPs and singles compilation) has songs that are certain to please any indie fan. The artist is California singer, songwriter, and guitarist John McCabe. John has released five EPs and some singles since 2017, and this record collects all of them. The country/American-oriented material has heft and and authenticity. As for the songs in the pop and rock channel -- which, to our ears, is most of the album -- useful touchstones are R.E.M. and Miracle Legion (John's vocals even sound like Michael Stipe's). John's lyrical perspective seems to be the loner, looking in at the world. But the material isn't soft and mournful. His vocals adorn full-blooded electric guitar arrangements in overdrive. Quite simply, it sounds wonderful.

The album is out now via Janglepophub in digital and CD formats. By the way, John also plays in a band called Good At Rockets.

Tubs - Dead Meat

 

Dead Meat was released last Friday so music fans with their ear to the ground for great new releases probably have listened to it several dozen times by now. For the rest of the world (including those waiting for us to bestir ourselves and write a post), it is time for you to hear one of the better albums of 2023. And yes, we are confident in making this statement less than one full month into the year.

The album is by Tubs whose members count several bands in their backgrounds. Notably, two members are Owen Williams and George Nicholls who were in Welsh band Joanna Gruesome. Other projects on the members' resumes include Snifanny & The Nits, The Snivellers ns SUEP. The band sketches their songs with a wide palette, encompassing post punk, '80s alternative, scrappy jangle. punk aggression and Frightened Rabbit-style folk rock. No matter the breadth, every song has deceptive complexity but fits together like a perfect puzzle. All that is left for the players is to sell it, and oh, do they sell it with fire and intelligence in equal measure.

"Vulture" by Holiday Ghosts

 

We typically go into a period of mourning after 'tax day' in the United States. It is sad to make millions of dollars from an indie music blog only have taxes diminish our beer budget. We thank you in advance for your sympathy. However, this year the mourning period will not be gloomy, because on April 21 Holiday Ghosts -- on of our favorite current bands -- will release new album Absolute Reality. The first single is the energetic, and a bit spooky, "Vulture".

Holiday Ghosts are Katja Rackin (vocals/drums), Samuel Stacpoole (vocals/guitar/synth), Benedict Nightingale (guitar/backing vocals), and Morgan Lloyd Matthews (bass). The single and album are released via FatCat Records.

"Into The Puzzle (Shortcut)" by Locked hands

 

Intriguing electro pop drops from Edinburgh's Locked Hands have been all too infrequent. However, we understand that that will change this year with the project's debut full length, The Fort Rhythm Section. The album is scheduled for release this Spring, but the inventive and rhythmic first track "Into The Puzzle (Shortcut)" is available to stream now.

Locked Hands is the project of Belfast-born, Edinburgh-based Sean Ormsby. Other Ormsby projects are Night Noise Team, Blue Tiles, and Errant Boy, all of which have featured on these pages in the past.

"Sunset Sea Breeze" and "Rain Song" by Whitney's Playland

 

We find it hard to imagine that true indie pop fans could listen to "Sunset Sea Breeze" and "Rain Song" and not pre-order the album from which they are taken. The songs are dreamy but substantial, and stick in your brain like all great pop does. It is true that Sunset Sea Breeze doesn't release until mid March, but a pre-order gets these two tracks now which makes the wait more tolerable. Complete details are at the Bandcamp link below.

Sunset Sea Breeze is the work of San Francisco band Whitney's Playland. The project began with Inna Showalter and George Tarlson, and more recently added Evan Showalter and Paul DeMartini.

The album is a joint release by Spain's Meritorio Records (vinyl and digital) and San Francisco's Paisley Shirt Records (cassette).

"Gone Tomorrow" by The Bluebells

Glasgow's The Bluebells have a reputation in knowing indie circles that is outsized in relation to their duration (a few years in the '80s and a couple of reunions) or output. But the reputation is deserved. One of the finer jangle/new wave bands of their era, they produced polished songs that transcended the music produced by many of their contemporaries. Although the core members went on to other projects, they have reformed and will release The Bluebells In The 21st Century, their first LP in a few decades on April 28. Lead single "Gone Tomorrow" is out now, and it is a cracker with a bouncing rhythm and soulful vocals. Strutting and breezy, it made our week. Two more singles will drop before the album. This is a very welcome return.

Julian Never - Pious Fiction

 

From the first notes of opening track "Seven Steps" we were hooked. After the 15 track run of Pious Fiction, we sighed and began again. From start to finish this album is superb. The artist is Julian Never, the current recording alias of Julian Elorduy (formerly drummer for MAYYORS and also helmed Fine Steps), who was joined by Mark Kaiser for this album. The foundation for these songs is jangling guitar pop, but sunny melodies are washed in sparkling synths calling to mind '80s New Romantics era hits. Julian's deep tenor is both soothing and commanding. While the entire album is a triumph, we especially like "Seven Steps", "High School", "Grassharp", "Step On" (oh, how we love this song), "Relax" (with a chug and strum that reminds us of New Zealand greats The Bats), and "The Fall". It is early in the year, but this is looking like a top 15 album to us.

Peter Hall - About Last Night

 

Nottingham's Peter Hall is an artist that deserves a wider audience. His musical territory is melodic rock and power pop. His previous EP and debut LP both made our rotations, so we were eager to hear his new mini album, About Last Night. In our view, this work is even more remarkable than its predecessors. We think Peter's special talent is the ability to craft songs that simultaneously tickle the brain and touch the heart. And a post-breakup album sung by a narrator that did not want the breakup does hit the heartstrings. But teardrops aside, the compositions are melodic and delivered in a pleasant and affecting high tenor. Other than our pleasure at the quality of the music, we had the feeling that we weren't hearing the songs for the first time, but rather they were treasured pieces from our catalog.

"Dopamine Detox" by Mary Anne's Polar Rig

 

In September we introduced the noisy, punk-influenced rock of Mary Anne's Polar Rig via single "Summer Girl" (link). The Malmo, Sweden band has a distinctive and energetic approach to their art and we find it quite refreshing. "Dopamine Detox", the second single from their upcoming album,  is out now and it certainly helps us open our eyes in the morning.

The members of the band are Malin Hofvander and Harald Ingvarsson. Makes You Wonder will be out March 24 via Rama Lama Records. Just because you likely are wondering, the band takes its name from a former mining station in the Arctic which has been repurposed as a hotel.

Spice World - There Is No I In Spice World

There is No I In Spice World may be an odd title, but we are here for the music, not the title. And what music this is! Freemantle's Spice World has graced us with ten tracks of pop ranging from jangling and upbeat to languid and careworn. We are reminded at times of Dick Diver, but Spice World is a bit shaggier and has a 'live to tape' informality of their own. But don't assume that spontaneity means lack of quality. These are inspired compositions, sincerely performed. And  There is No I In Spice World just may be one of the better albums you will hear in the first quarter of 2023.

Spice World are Jonny Burrows, Lyndon Blue, Julia Suddenly, Rhian Todhunter, and Layla Martin. The album is out now via Tenth Court and Meritorio. If you order vinyl, US orders will ship from Portland and European orders will ship from Spain, reducing the mailing costs.

"Lose" by Lachlan Denton

 

We already felt that 2023 was shaping up to be a good year for indie releases. And then it got better -- Lachlan Denton, songwriter and musician with excellent bands The Ocean Party, Pop Filter and Partner Look, is releasing the next chapter of his solo career this year. The album is Furnishings, and will be released via Bobo Integral Records on April 14. We have no doubt that it will be 'must have' album, but you don't even need to trust us. Judge for yourself with the bright and positive "Lose".

"I Confess" and "In Space" by Connections

 

For music fans like the editorial board at WYMA (including the hound dog sleeping at my feet and the cat sleeping in my office chair which forces me to type this post standing up), there always is an emotional rush in discovering a new band that tickles our ears. Today's joyous find is Ohio's Connections. With a power pop jangle reminiscent of Big Star and Teenage Fanclub, their new single "I Confess" is an undeniable gem. And then there is the first song released from their upcoming album, the indie pop carnival delight "In Space".

Of course, discovering them doesn't mean we are ace detectives. After all, we have learned that the band has released five albums and has been together for ten years. Number six is titled Cool Change and will be out in March via Trouble In Mind Records. We don't intend to miss it.

"Pa min cykel" by E. Bjorklund

 Swedish songwriter and musician Erik Bjorklund has just released the second single from his upcoming album. The jaunty tune is titled "Pa min cykel" and is about the feeling one has after a long bike ride.

Formerly of Delsbo Beach Club and Blodmyren, the prolific Mr. Bjorklund had written a number of songs in years past that hadn't been released via his other projects. He has collect the songs and given the album the apt title Latar fran en svunnen tid (trans: Songs from the past). It will be out April 14 via Rama Lama Records.

"Moon Boy" by First Day of Spring

 

"Moon Boy" is a song that makes us very happy, so we have to thank First Day of Spring for not living up to their name and waiting for, well, the first day of spring before sharing it with the world. Melodic, with an uplifting arrangements and shoegaze accents, it is one of those songs that seem to demand the "replay" button -- and we cannot resist.

The song heralds the coming of the band's EP Fly Over Apple Blossom which will be released February 24.

Various Artists - We Don't Make No Junk!

 

We have expressed our admiration for mighty little Flagstaff, Arizona label Emotional Response Records on several occasions. They have proved their worth once again with We Don't Make No Junk! Released at the end of 2022, it is the product of the astute decision to include songs from the label's various 2022 releases to showcase the talent and alert potential buyers to talent they may have overlooked. We find it hard to imagine that one could listen to the songs and not investigate full albums by a few of the artists. We have provided a few streams below, but their are many more delights on the album. Fair warning -- Lande Hekt may have the sweetest voice in the world.

Note that while the album is 'name your price', a few coins for the label will make it more likely that they can continue to release albums by indie artists.
