"Tell Me Nothing" by Fort Not

Kungalv, Sweden duo Fort Not's upcoming album is titled Depressed For Success but we aren't anticipating a downer of an album. Take a listen to the bright, British invasion vibes of new single "Tell Me Nothing" and you will know why. It is likely to be one of the indie albums of the summer so don't miss out.

Fort Not is Fredrik Soderstrom and Robert Carlsson. Depressed For Success will be out July 7 via Meritorio Records.

"Whip Around" by Life Strike

One of our favorite Australian post-punk bands -- Life Strike -- was featured here last month (link) with the first two singles from their upcoming Peak Dystopia LP. We now have number 3, the twangy rocker "Whip Around". We commend it to your ears.

Life Strike are Nick Pratt, Patrick McCabe and Scotty Brique. Peak Dystopia will be released on July 14 via Stable Label (Aus) and Bobo Integral.

"I'll Never Make It" b/w "Don't Fade Out" by Cut Worms

We are getting a very good feeling about the upcoming self-titled album by Brooklyn-based Cut Worms. We featured the single "Ballad of the Texas King" last week (link) and today can bring you the brand new single "I'll Never Make It" paired with "Don't Fade Out. The songs are breezy and impeccably crafted slices of pop. We now have heard 1/3 of the songs on the album, and each is a winner.

Cut Worms is Max Clarke. The album will be out July 21 via Jagjaguwar.

Wireheads - Potentially Venus

As spring flows into summer, we are in love. Actually, we love a number of people and things, but our latest love is Potentially Venus. No, not a woman who might be Venus (although we wouldn't complain ...), but the new album by Wireheads. It is the Australian band's sixth album in a decade, and it provides further confirmation to what we already had concluded -- for our tastes, this band is one of the best around. What makes them wonderful? Consider their catholic approach to styles and genres, applying their skills in country, jangle, space rock, pun, post-punk, psychedelic, and alt folk. Then overlay the inspired and, at times, mind-bending stories and the dynamic arrangements. The result is a collage of inventive and engaging songs that come at the listener from multiple angles. The only constant is a high satisfaction rating.

We have embedded a few of our favorites below. We almost included "The Cascadia Fault Line" -- a great track! But a song about a likely future major earthquake in the Seattle area is literally a bit to close to home for us.

Wireheads are leader Dom Trimboli and a collective of worthy collaborators. Long may they run.

And while it is too early for year end lists, our crystal ball says Potentially Venus will be in our top ten. It is out now via Tenth Court Records.

"Domino" by Diners

For the last hour here at WYMA HQ only one song has been played, but it has been played many times. That song is "Domino" by Diners. The second single from the upcoming Domino LP, the song has a positive message and an incredibly catchy power pop arrangement. However your day is going, "Domino" will make it better.

Diners is the project of Blue Broderick. Domino will be out August 18 via Bar/None Records.

"Keep Your Head On" by Swansea Sound

For all of us struggling to deal with information overload and false and misleading media, the indie superstars comprising Swansea Sound give us the anthem "Keep Your Head On". The members of the band are Huw Williams, Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey, Bob Collins, and Ian Button, whose former projects include The Pooh Sticks, Talulah Gosh, and Heavenly. "Keep Your Head On" is a duet (or duel) between Huw and Amelia. The video action is set in an adult learning classroom.

The single is taken from their upcoming LP Twentieth Century which will be released on September 8 via Skep Wax. If it is as good as their last LP (our feature here) we will be over the moon with joy.

Norway's Colored Lights are cooking up something very good for music fans. "I Used To Cook", the first single from their self-titled debut album was featured here earlier this month (link). The band now has released the second single, the bright and propulsive "Stabbing Clouds" which we like even more.

Colored lights are Frode Stromstad (I Was A King/The No Ones) with Bard Ingebrigtsen, Frank Tonnesen, Ole Reidar Gudmestad, and Tomas Pettersen.

"Ballad of the Texas King" by Cut Worms

Max Clarke made us very happy tonight. The Brookyn-based singer-songwriter who records and performs as Cut Worms has released the first single from his upcoming self-titled album. The song is "Ballad of the Texas King". The theme of the tune seems to be things are uncertain, things change, and road bumps appear, but the only thing to do is to keep on going. What really connects us to this song is the too cool for school vibe and easy swinging melody. And all of that is reinforced by the official video.

Cut Worms will be out in all formats July 21 via Jagjaguwar.

Heavenly - Le Jardin de Heavenly (reissue)

Heavenly is deservedly one of the most beloved indie pop bands from the days of twee pop/Sarah Records. Accordingly, a reissue of their catalog is an event that both the band and their fans deserve. Fortunately for all parties, Skep Wax (the label run by Heavenly members Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey) are reissuing all four albums. The first, Heavenly vs Satan, dropped in the Autumn of 2022 (WYMA feature). Le Jardin de Heavenly became available last month. The third will be released in Autumn of 2023, with the fourth available the following Spring.

Le Jardin de Heavenly is a terrific follow-up to the band's debut album, maintaining the DIY spirit but displaying increased confidence. Their palette also broadened to embrace some shoegazey elements and additional sonic layers to complement the wonderful pop melodies. It is a seminal album by a seminal indie pop band. The original album's eight tracks are augmented for this reissue with four bonus tracks selected from singles which did no appear on an album.

On Le Jardin de Heavenly the four original members of Heavenly -- Amelia Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Rob Pursey, and Mathew Fletcher -- were joined by new member Cathy Rogers. On album track "C Is The Heavenly Option" one half of the duet is sung by Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening), head of K Records which released the album in the United States.

"Without A Doubt" / "Communion" by Lewsberg

New album by Dutch favorites Lewsberg! Well, not really; or at least not yet. But there will be a new album titled Out And About in September, and early mixes of two songs have been released to remind us why we should care. "Without A Doubt" is an airy, bouncy delight with a summery feel. "Communion" is an intriguing talk-sing slice of guitar pop. One listen and you may be all in for Lewsberg.

The band intends to self-release Out And About, but the physical will be released via 12XU.

Virgin of the Birds - Viper Summer EP

We know that when we have pressed "play" on a recording with the intent of making notes and discussing the tracks in turn, but instead listen to the entire recording twice without pause or discussion, we have our hands an a very good recording. And that has been our reintroduction to the world of Virgin of the Birds via their new EP Viper SummerVotB is the sometimes solo, sometimes group, project of Jon Rooney,  serving as an entrancing vehicle for Jon's literate and poetically drawn stories and observations. Whether creating a fable, twisting history or reinterpreting a former relationship, the songs take us to another place. For instance, track 4 is an upbeat romp about Pope Clement VI hanging our in Avignon, France to avoid the Black Plague outbreak in Rome. other tracks touch on a giantess, a mermaid, a poet, and the loneliness. This is music that can make you feel, make you think, and make you laugh. For us, that adds up to a winner.

For this EP VotB was Jon Rooney, Colin J. Nelson, Ken Nottingham and Paul Beaudry. Contributions also were made by Faith Elliot and Sophie Dodds and Reuben Taylor of Scottish band Storm the Palace. Viper Summer is out now as a digital download.

Tough Age - Waiting Here

Sometimes an album hits our sweet spot as if it was created to do just than only for us. Of course, we are way too jaded to entertain that conceit for more than a moment. But the satisfaction with Waiting Here, the new album by Vancouver's Tough Age, remains long after we remind ourselves of our relative unimportance in the music world. Of course, a band with influences such as The Clean, The Bats, The Feelies, Yo La Tengo, and Guided by Voices is sure to attract our attention. But the music only works because the songwriting is sharp and the performances on point, and Tough Age meets those standards with room to spare. There is a certain indie pop perfection to hitting the bullseye with simultaneously projecting sincerity but not appearing to be straining too hard. And to be perfectly honest, a few of these songs could easily move into the top ten songs of Tough Age's Kiwi influences if they had recorded them, and you can't do better than that.

Tough Age are Jarrett Evan Sampson (guitar/vocals/keys), Lauren Smith (bass/vocals), and Jesse Locke (drums/percussion). Waiting Here is out now in vinyl and digital formats via We Are Time (Canada) and Bobo Integral (rest of the world).

The Reds, Pinks & Purples - Unloveable Losers EP

It is no longer a surprise when The Reds, Pinks & Purples offers a new release relatively soon after another one. Nor is it a surprise that despite the prolificity the quality is unassailably high. The latest is the just released the six-track Unloveable Losers EP. Four of the tracks have previously been available as singles, one track is new, and the fifth track -- "Only Life of Fun" -- is a Moving Targets cover. As we would expect, the melodies and hooks are excellent and well-adorned with fuzz and haze to complement Glenn Donaldson's affecting vocals.

Unloveable Losers EP is a digital-only release offered at 'name your price'.

Sir Bobby Jukebox - Sir Bobby Jukebox in the Organ Loft at Midnight

As Yanks, we generally aren't impressed with royalty and associated titles like "lord", "duke", or "sir". However, we are strong proponents of initiative and confident self-promotion. Accordingly, we applaud the decision of Dublin musician and songwriter Bobby Aherne of No Monster Club to award himself a title and brand his solo effort as Sir Bobby Jukebox. His second album as Sir Bobby is the recently released Sir Bobby Jukebox in the Organ Loft at Midnight. And we are featuring it here because it might be some of the most fun and satisfying pop music you have heard in a long time. It is infused with humor, joy, and a childlike sense of wonder coupled with an adult sense of the absurd. We have never had the experience of venturing to an organ loft at midnight. But if we knew that the climb up the stairs would lead us to a wonderful jukebox such as the one Sir Bobby offers here, we would happily make the trip daily.

The album is out now via Popical Island. For purchase information, see the Bandcamp link below. You can purchase the digital album, but a physical is only available via a purchase of bubblegum cards with the associated right to stream and download the album. The cards reflect the artwork of Sir Bobby's younger self, and are much better for the environment and easier to mail than vinyl and CD.

"Tibet" by Kindsight

Our Danish friends Kindsight have released new single "Tibet" and if you aren't familiar with this band, it is a good starting point. It begins as a pop song featuring Nina Rasmussen's affecting vocals trading lines with a male vocalist, but explodes into a more abrasive rock piece before dialing back to the pop mode. The song builds to a crescendo again before its conclusion. Welcome to one of the more dynamic young acts on the scene.

Kindsight are Nina Hyldgaard Rasmussen (vocals/guitar), Soren Svensson (guitar), Anders Prip (bass), and Johannes Jacobsen (drums). "Tibet" is out now via Rama Lama Records.

Armstrong - Summer Is Here EP

If you long for sweet, sunny pastoral pop, Armstrong is your man. His 2019 album Under Blue Skies (link) could be the Wiki entry for that genre. More recently he assembled four songs he had been developing and released them as the Summer Is Here EP. Since it is the summer season around here, we thought it would be a good time to share them. Enjoy!

Armstrong is the performance name for Julian Pitt.

"The Stuff" by The Allah-Lahs

Here at WYMA World Headquarters there can't be much more welcome news than Allah-Lahs will be releasing a new album. The sliver of bad news is that Zuma 85 won't be out until October 13. So that means we will have to fill our summer with, well, other stuff. What 'stuff', you ask? We think everyone can decide that question for themselves, but the Los Angeles four-piece has offered a bit of guidance themselves with the first single from the upcoming album: "The Stuff".

"Postpartum" and "Because I Am A Woman" by Angharad

On "Postpartum" the new alt folk single by Swansea Angharad (Angharad Jenkins) the artist offers a bluntly detailed description of the downsides of being a new mother, including stress, negative physical changes and a loss of self. That doesn't mean that Angharad is advocating against becoming a mother, but forewarned is forearmed.

"Postpartum" is out now via Libertino Records. The artist's previous single was the defiant, disco-styled feminist anthem "Because I Am A Woman" which we have included below to provide a bit more perspective on Angharad's music.

"Bright Gold Cross" by Suburban Spell

Suburban Spell is synthwave artist Peter Endall, formerly of '80s Melbourne band Schizo Sherzo. He has returned to recording his own brand of electronica, and will release an EP titled Falling Down on June 23. Take it for a test drive with track "Bright Gold Cross", which brings to our minds Kraftwerk, OMD and New Order, as well as a wave of other '80s memories (yes, we are that old). This definitely is an EP we are looking forward to hearing.

The Toads - In The Wilderness

OK, we are back writing about music after a couple of days geeking out about the indictment of a former U.S. President. As lawyers, we are allowed to do that.

But on to the important matters, like the takeover of our music system by amphibians. Yes, we have had In The Wilderness by The Toads playing loudly for several days now. We hasten to point out that this is not a complaint. After all, we cued up the music and keep pressing to replay. So, you might ask -- what prompts all of the replays? Well, the excitement of garage pop played with just the right amount of abandon is a good start. And then there is the aggressive and sometimes abrasive post punk elements, leavened with subversive streaks of pop and contrasting nuggets of jittery anxiety. Putting all those elements together takes some confidence, but with talent comes confidence so The Toads nail it.

The Toads are Miles Jensen (vocals), Billy Gardner (guitar ), Stella Rennex (bass), and Elsie Retter (drums), all of whom are borrowed (or stolen) from The Living Eyes, The Shifters and Parsnip.

In The Wilderness is out now via Anti Fade Records and Upset The Rhythm.

"Water Machine Pt. II" by Water Machine

It is evident that Glasgow four-piece Water Machine believes that music can be fun. And they are sufficiently convinced that their special chemistry, called 'raw liquid power', is the secret sauce that they have titled their upcoming EP Raw Liquid Power. Are they right? We will know in good time. But in our expert and quite nearly infallible opinion (we thought Dortmund would win), new single "Water Machine Pt. II" is infectious and loads of fun. And as summer arrives, a reminder to hydrate is very timely.

Water Machine are Hando Morice, Flore de Hoog, Jimmy Gage, and Goda Ilgauskaite. Raw Liquid Power will be out August 4 via Upset The Rhythm.

"Easy Out" by Thala

Sadness, anger, and tension, building to a rapturous wall of sound -- that's "Easy Out" by Berlin talent Thala. The song is the latest single taken from her upcoming In Theory Depression EP which is out July 7 via Fire Records. Reviewing her singles to date indicate that the self-taught artist is equally comfortable with pop, psychedelic, and dream pop modes of musical expression. We think the EP is going to be well worth our attention.

"Truth About You" by The Particles

A month ago we alerted readers to the upcoming release of 1980s Bubblegum, consisting of selected songs by fine '80s Australian band The Particles. The post streamed a couple of singles from the album and also featured the album trailer. We now have a new single titled "Truth About You". We find the song quite appealing, but if your ears tell you it is more post punk that bubblegum, we won't disagree. But then, the band never intended to be bound or defined as bubblegum.

1980s Bubblegum will be out on July 7 via Chapter Music. US fans can purchase at Seasick Records and UK fans can purchase at Monorail Music.

Generationals - Heatherhead

Fourteen years after their first album, Generationals still have the chops to excite with brightly-colored '80s shaded pop and the taste to know when they have hit the bullseye. What amazes us, however, is how fresh the band sounds on Heatherhead, their latest album and seventh overall (if we are counting correctly, none of us were math majors). The arrangements are varied and playful, melodies and hooks are uplifting, and the rhythms big and propulsive. The end result sounds like a series of anthems polished to just the right degree.

The songs that we embedded below grabbed our attention at first listen. But there is no filler in this set. For example, also check out "Elena" and "Faster Than A Fever".

Generationals are Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer. Heatherhead is out now via Polyvinyl.

Guardian Singles - Feed Me To The Doves

Feed Me To The Doves by Guardian Singles commanded our total attention from the first song to the last. Vibrating with energy and filled with punk and post-punk infused social and political commentary, it is chaos reformed and structured into a bold and captivating statement. The members of this New Zealand band are completely locked-in with the songs sounding both polished and live to tape. And by the way, this rhythm section absolutely rocks our world.

We extend a warn welcome to Seattle singer-songwriter Natalie Lew. Recording and performing as Lemon Sea (named after local sea slugs), she released the Close Up EP last year. System Exclusive - Party All The Time EP

Are human beings wired to party all the time? We don't know the answer to that question. But we do know that if we want to try to party all the time, we need a suitable soundtrack. And if we are constructing such a soundtrack, we certainly can't leave out an EP titled Party All the Time. "Killer Bee" by Wireheads

We are not fortune tellers, although wearing a costume and sitting by a globe and telling people lies for money has a certain appeal. And we wouldn't even need to sign up with the election committee unlike the other professional liars. But there is one bit of the future we can foretell with high confidence: Potentially Venus by Wireheads will be one of our favorite albums of the year. There are three singles available to date, including the just-released "Killer Bee", and all of them are classic Wirehead gems. We assure you that the rest of the songs are terrific as well.

Wireheads are there own genre, an indie rock/post punk/psychedelic/jangle/alt country/punk collective that gives life to the weird and wonderous songwriting of leader Dom Trimboli. "Killer Bee" is a psychedelia-shaded alt country jam with a thumping rhythm line and addresses several themes, including the downside of living near the police station and a bee sting. As always, it is an interesting ride.

Potentially Venus will be out in digital and vinyl formats via Tenth Court Records. See the Bandcamp link below for pre-orders. For vinyl distribution in the  US contact distribution@thebusinessanacortes.com, for everywhere else, contact Matthew Ford at www.tenthcourt.com
