It's time for a Matinee matinee! What, exactly does that mean? Well, it means that we are going to publish a series of posts about recent releases from the one and only Matinee Recordings. We usually don't stack posts about releases from a single label, but Matinee is one of our favorites and they have been busy lately. Stay with us, all are terrific, and these small labels deserve our support.
First up is Spain's The Royal Landscaping Society. The recording is titled Fractals and is a three-song EP of breathtaking heartbreak pop. Key track "When There Is Nothing Left To Look Forward To" is a starkly straightforward but eloquent lament about lost love wrapped in a rhythmic and chiming arrangement. But the quality doesn't falter with the following two tracks. This is not music criticism. On this blog, you will only read about music we like.

Cats of Transnistria - IV
In the past, Finnish duo Cats of Transnistria have thrilled us with their multi-layered, intense and dramatic shoegaze. But for IV, their recently released new album, Henna Emilia Hietamaki and Tuomas Alatalo have broadened their sonic platform with more varied and complex rhythms and bass guitar. The result is a further increase in intensity and a distinct wash of foreboding. With serious lyrical themes to match the intensity of the music, this probably isn't background music for the kids' breakfast before sending them out to catch the bus. But we have found it to be a great soundtrack for our days. As we recently described the album when recommending it to a friend: This is the rare shoegaze with a genuine personality". And we all like new, interesting friends, don't we?
IV is out now as a digital release and limited vinyl via Helsinki's Soliti Music.

"Any Other World" by Deradoorian
"Any Other World" is a tune that grabs your brain, shakes it, massages it, and leaves you feeling more alive and energetic. That it also has an accessible social message is just icing on the musical cake. It is no surprise that such a stunning single is the work of New York synth pop artist Deradoorian, also of Decisive Pink and , formerly, Dirty Projectors.
If you, like us, like what Angel Deradoorian is creating, note that her new album Ready for Heaven will be released May 9 via Fire Records.

Azure Blue -Night of the Stars
In our opinion, one of the immutably timeless genres in pop music is Nordic synth pop. It always satisfies and, at its best, its soaring sounds inspires and comforts in equal measure. And when engaging with the best of Nordic synth pop, Azure Blue earns a prominent place. The project of Sweden's Tobias Isaksson, Azure Blue has just released its sixth album, Night of the Stars, and it compares favorably to his best work. The warmth of the arrangements is match by the lyrical content, creating a coherent and consistent message of human interconnectedness and interdependence. Readers not familiar with the delights of Tobias' artistry will likely find some appealing reminders of New Order. But for those of us who have been following the man, Night of the Stars is yet another highlight in his discography.
Night of the Stars is out now in vinyl, CD and digital formats via Hybris, Matinee Recordings, and Anna Logue Records.

"Three Times The Drama" by Azure Blue
It is the season for summer hits to massage our ears. One offering that is high on our list right now is "Three Times The Drama", an up tempo synth/dream pop by Sweden's Azure Blue. Sharply crafted and uplifting, with a wash of melancholy, it is memorable and begs for repeated listens. It is but one of the gems that we expect to find on the project's upcoming album Night of the Stars. However, this one is special because it is dedicated to main man Tobias Isaksson's mother, who recently passed. Our sympathies to Tobias.

"Be Kind" by The Male Gays
Here at WYMA we are fans of accepting people the way they are rather than setting up barriers. A simple rule could just be, well, be kind. Heck, we don't even do negative reviews here. If we don't like a release, why ruin someone's day and make their mother cry?
So, we were happy to receive "Be Kind", the first single by The Male Gays. It is a slow-burning and sincere plea for tenderness. The song is the title track of the project's three song single/EP which will be released August 2. Expect insight, humor, and entertaining music.
And who are The Male Gays? Two gay, self-described music nerds named Guy Blackman and Bart McDonagh. But however correct, that phrase may be, it undersells the gentlemen. Guy and Bart have played in several bands, but they have made a considerable mark in the indie music world in their roles at fine labels Chapter Music (Melbourne) and Domino Records (London), respectively. They have both earned our respect and thanks for releasing some of our favorite music over the years.

"Free Cake for Every Creature" by Red Sleeping Beauty
Last month we highlighted the new project from Swedish synth pop masters Red Sleeping Beauty. The jist is that the band will release a song at the beginning of every month this year. A purchase at Bandcamp will entitle the listener to an album in progress. At the close of the year, the album will be complete. The February song is "Free Cake For Every Creature". The tune trades the soaring highs of the January offering for a fun and delightfully constructed pop song. We think this project is progressing very nicely.

"Chain of Days" by Topographies
Dark, icy shoegaze is just what the musical doctor prescribed for this midweek evening, and it comes via "Chain of Days" by San Francisco's Topographies. It is the second single from the band's upcoming second album, Interior Spring, and it certainly raises both our interest and expectations for the release.

"Caroline (I Found Love)" by Red Sleeping Beauty
We suppose that artists search for their own personal way to find inspiration and motivation (we need to "suppose" because there seems to be a -- at least temporary -- gap between true artistic talent and our "talents"). Our beloved Swedish band Red Sleeping Beauty has decided to release a song every month in 2024 to prime their creative side. But buying the song isn't just going to get you a single, it is a purchase of an album in progress. And every ensuing month will bring another track. At the end of the year the purchaser will have a 12-track Red Sleeping Beauty album!
Well, it is January of 2024 and we have single number one: "Caroline (I Found Love)". It is classic Red Sleeping Beauty with big pop hooks and bigger vintage synth arrangements, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

"Rise" / "Define Your Dreams" by Azure Blue
We were feeling a bit lethargic after our weekend, but we jumpstarted the week with the euphoric Nordic pop single "Rise" / "Define Your Dreams" by Azure Blue. We love the soaring synths and the dominant bass lines. It give us good New Order vibes with that appealing Swedish gloss. Get it now via Matinee Recordings.

"Bright Gold Cross" by Suburban Spell
Suburban Spell is synthwave artist Peter Endall, formerly of '80s Melbourne band Schizo Sherzo. He has returned to recording his own brand of electronica, and will release an EP titled Falling Down on June 23. Take it for a test drive with track "Bright Gold Cross", which brings to our minds Kraftwerk, OMD and New Order, as well as a wave of other '80s memories (yes, we are that old). This definitely is an EP we are looking forward to hearing.

Skytone - Adrift
Skytone is a duo consisting of siblings Rodney and Darius Doddridge. When we first encountered their music they were best described as a jangle pop band. However, for new album Adrift the brothers have created a very appealing tapestry of crystalline synth pop. So the sound is more Stockholm/Malmo than Dunedin/Glasgow. But the hooks are good, the choruses soar, and the arrangements paint in warm, bright colors. This album is so good that you will want to play it right now and think of warmer times. But don't forget to break it out again next summer for a worthy encore.
Adrift is out now via Ottawa label The Beautiful Music.

Stephen McLaren - They Don't Put Any Money In Your Pocket
We always pay attention when Stephen McLaren graces the world with new music. And our attention is always richly rewarded whether the music is Stephen's solo work or his work with others. Today we focus on his new solo album They Don't Put Any Money In Your Pocket. The album delivers piano ballads, synthy dreampop, and wide scope pop anthems. But it isn't just a collection of quality songs. McLaren has thoughts political and social on his mind, and he crafts them into concise and direct statements with loads of heart and some anger, but also with charm and wit. And because he is Stephen McLaren, those statements are decorated with great musical skill and his best set of vocal performances to date. They Don't Put Any Money In Your Pocket is a treasure of an album and it deserves your ears, as well as a place in your music collection.
The album is out now in digital, CD and vinyl formats via Errant Media.

The Glass Picture - The Glass Picture EP
The Glass Pictures was formed in 2020 by new flatmates Violetta Del Conte-Race and Lucy Emanuel (collectively veterans of Las Tetas, Modal Melodies, Primo!, and Reserve Game). However, as evidenced by their debut self-titled EP, the duo has quickly honed a distinctive and enthralling sound. Their songs are synth pop, but with dark folk and baroque elements. The melodies are captivating and the details lavishly applied, but the songs have a force about them. We assure you that you will be left wanting more. The replay button is your friend.

"Define Your Dreams" by Azure Blue
If we were nominating a small number of artists for the status of synth pop royalty, Tobias Isaksson, who records and performs as Azure Blue, certainly would be included. His gorgeous melodies and romantic themes washed with melancholy have thrilled and soothed us over the years. Recently, as he celebrates the ten year anniversary of the release of Rule of Thirds -- the first of his five Azure Blue albums, the Swedish artist announced that a new album would be coming in 2022 and released a positive and uplifting new single, "Define Your Dreams'. Stream it below and watch for further news of the album.
The single, which is out now as a digital release, and the album are provided via Hybris with distribution handled by ALOADED.

Shoestrings - Expectations
The new album is infused with all of the charm of their first album, but also benefits from their immersion in the Nordic pop world. The production is detailed but not cluttered, the vocals nuanced and well up in the mix, and the arrangements are far more adventurous than standard indie pop. Expectations is a delightful and rewarding listen, and we think it will make the end of your weekend a littler warmer and brighter. We can only hope that Mario and Rose don't wait several decades before the next album.
Expectations is out now in digital, CD and vinyl formats via Shelflife Records (North America), Discos de Kirlian (Europe), and Fastcut Records (Japan).

"Gone" by Shoestrings
I hope no one has been holding their breath for Shoestrings' second record, because 30 years is a very long time. But art and inspiration don't follow a schedule. Moreover, some art and their creators need time and experiences to truly realize their potential. On the evidence provided by "Gone", Shoestrings may be just such an artist.
The song is a relationship-about-to-go-wrong sketch told in light melancholy and lush and bubbling arrangement. But listen closely and you will discover delightful details just below the top line, blurred like the soundtrack to an old black and white movie.
The band consists of Mario and Rose Suau, who are based in Michigan. "Gone" is out now as a digital release. Expectations will be released November 5th via Shelflife (North America), Discos De Kirlian (Europe), and Fastcut Records (Japan).

"Give It Hell" - Yumi Zouma
Our favorite New Zealand synth poppers Yumi Zouma could have just announced their Spring 2022 European tour, but that is a bit staid. So the quartet accompanied the news with a new single and a lyric video. Please enjoy below, and you Euro types can check out the dates.
On "Give It Hell" the listener will find the band's trademark swoonable vocals, but also thrill to the explosion of textures and expanded dynamism in the arrangement.
Yumi Zouma are Christie Simpson, Josh Burgess, Charlie Ryder, and Olivia Campion.

"What A Scene" (feat. Sui Zhen) by Geoffrey O'Connor
Ah, Geoffrey O'Connor is a sly one. Former frontman for the excellent pop band Crayon Fields, he has announced a solo album titled For So Long As I Remember, to be released August 6. But he has ensured that his multi-layered compositions would benefit from additional sonic texture and emotional content by adding a guest vocalist for each if the 11 tracks. The result is a solo album comprised of 11 duets. We will have more to say about this album in a week, but for today, just enjoy "What A Scene", featuring Sui Zhen. Wonderful vocal interplay, a rubbery bassline an a languid arrangement transports you to late nigh adventures.
For So Long As I Remember will be released via Melbourne's Chapter Music.

Man Without Country - Bloods, Side A EP
Bloods, Side A is a testament to the power of electronic music to exude warmth, depth, emotion and color. The record is the work of Welsh artist Ryan A. James, recording as Man Without Country. James' music is detailed, playful and complete, offering a full package of melody, beats and crafted lyrics. In his 30s, James has had a solid career in collaboration with others, solo, and remixing. However, the quality of his work exceeds his fame. If justice is served, this EP will give him the recognition he deserves.
Bloods, Side A is out now in digital and CD formats.
