"17 18 19" by Ibibio Sound Machine

This will get your feet moving -- "17 18 19" by London's Ibibio Sound Machine. Combining Afrocentric rhythms, electro-pop, disco and post punk, this band is one of the more refreshing bands we are currently evaluating. The song is from their upcoming new album Electricity, which will be out March 25 via Merge Records.

"Found Out" by Locked Hands

We are starting our day with a downloadable nugget from Scotland - "Found Out" by Locked Hands. This project's brand of electronic pop eschews routine templates and never fails to deliver thrills. "Found Out" grabbed our interest instantly with a stuttering dub beat, then blending in shadowy vocals. Short and punchy, it is a track that earns a lot of replays around here.

Locked hands is one of the projects of Belfast-to-Edinburgh's Sean Ormsby, who also is co-head of label Errant Media.

I Am A Rocketship - Orange EP

Perfect for the last evening of the weekend, Orange EP by I Am A Rocketship wraps the listener in a throbbing dance groove through three tracks, then the brooding rocker "The Light In Your Eyes" and the slow-burning "Back From The Shadows".

I Am A Rocketship is duo Eric Weissinger and L E Kippner. Weissinger has been a bass and guitar hired gun for various acts, and Kippner formerly was the vocalist for a Swedish pop band. Together they create an intriguing blend of dream pop and dance rock with some experimental touches, embellished with lyrics inspired by the state of the world. The duo is versatile enough that the five songs don't allow us to predict the direction an LP might take, but we can say we would be eager to hear it.

Orange EP is out now as a digital release via My Long Wknd.

"Getting By" by Locked Hands

The always compelling Locked Hands is helping us get by in lock down with "The Getting By". The song is a swirling electropop tune that changes moods between late night cabaret and jazzy breakdowns. Perfect for our late night musings.

The release date technically is a few days away, but you can download the song now at the Soundcloud link. It is released via Errant Media.

"Keep Warm" by The Drives

Shimmering pop with warm '70s vibes never goes out of style, and "Keep Warm" by California duo The Drives is a prime example.  The song has been on repeat at WYMA headquarters for several days, and we don't expect that to change soon.  So a tip of the When You Motor Away motoring cap to Andrew Levin and Casey Chen for producing one of he most addictive songs we have heard in a long time.

"In And Out Of Love" by Vera

We'll start out the day with a wonderfully chill, late night delight from Copenhagen producer Vera.  We love the melody, the vibe and, of course, the sax.  Recalling other recent artists we've featured, including Goss, with whom Vera has worked, we'd have to say the music scene in Copenhagen is in good health.

Slowes - Times EP

The music world is awash with electro-pop, which raises the question:  Is that a good thing or a bad thing?  Of course, that is a trick question because the answer depends on the songwriting and performance.  When we sorted through new electro--pop recently, the duo that seems to us to drip with promise is Slowes.  The multifaceted Copenhagen duo has just delivered their debut EP Times, and we have it on repeated plays.  Opening song "Anymore" and the third track, "Enough", offer perfectly crafted, glossy, neo-R&B synth pop.  The title track presents moody, dubby experimental pop.  Track four is "U", a bittersweet new wave song about wanting someone who wants someone else.  The EP's mood becomes slower and more contemplative with "Heartbreak Again" and "OOX", the second of which is a slow burner that is becoming a favorite around here.  Love and loss with solid melodies and beats and R&B influenced vocals -- a very good debut and highly recommended to start your weekend.

Slowes is Jack Kilburn (vocals) and Anders Hamann (beats).  Times EP is out today via Distiller Records.

THE PERFECT KISS - Disconnect

Ahhh, the lodestar of kisses, "the perfect kiss".  Of course, when given a choice between the elusive perfect kiss and the variety of lesser kisses we more frequently encounter, we would choose the perfect over the imperfect (ignoring for purposes of discussion what other levels of encounter are on offer with the kiss).  That doesn't mean we feel badly about lesser kisses.  One doesn't know until we kiss whether the act will achieve perfection, and we'll add that when it comes to real kisses, we am fairly catholic -- you may kiss us even if you suspect your kiss isn't perfect.

However, when you encounter a perfect kiss, it overshadows the pretenders.  So too, in pop music.  Thus, we bring you a musical perfect kiss.  And not to be coy, it is THE PERFECT KISS (all caps, in case you didn't catch the import of the words themselves).  Their debut mini-LP is Disconnect, and after listening closely, we'd have to observe that it is a wonderful thing when the audacity of the promise in the name matches the execution.  The project is headed by the pop-tastic Joe Moore, who previously fronted THE YEARNING and Lia Pamina.  For Disconnect, Joe provides all the instrumentation on a vintage Yamaha PortaSound PSS-450.  He has recruited Holly Vanags to sing, and it is an inspired choice as her sweet, delicate voice complements the material perfectly.  The songs have all of the sugary melodies and sign-provoking hooks of classic indie pop purveyors such as Ladytron, Saint Etienne, with the added wry thematic spin of a Stephin Merrit (The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes and others).  Joe's lyrical observations address disillusionment and disconnection in today's world, and you follow along with the lyrics while streaming the entire album at the Bandcamp link below.  In fact, we recommend streaming it -- consider it the equivalent of an extended musical perfect kiss.

Disconnect is available now in 10" vinyl or digital download formats via Madrid's Elefant Records.  You can find some details at the Bandcamp link below, and stream the album.

"New Preset" by Djustin

Djustin is proof that long distance relationships can work, at least in the context of music creation.  The Stockholm (Johan Angergard) / Detroit (Rose Suau) pairing are former pen pals who became musical partners despite the geographic separation.  Their new album Voyagers will be released later this spring, but the duo is treating us to a few tracks.  We recently featured "Dancing", and now we can stream "New Preset".  We think it is brash, confident, and eminently danceable.  What a great start to the weekend!

"Comb My Hair" by Coast Modern

We think that Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas, more concisely known as Coast Modern, are an electro-pop band that is poised for breakout.  After all, they have featured several times in the influential When You Motor Away blog, as well as other, lesser publications.  The LA duo's latest creation is "Comb My Hair".  I think it is a fine song even though I never comb my hair; I just let it curl up the way it wants to.  Live and let live, and all that ...

"For The Record" by Beat Connection

The lads at Seattle's Beat Connection decided they couldn't let summer pass without a new tune, so they've dropped "For The Record" on to our backyard dance parties and beach fire discos.  Warm and nostalgic, but with plenty of meaty beats and calls to move, it is just what we needed.  Thanks, guys.  Headed to the back deck with a brew right after I press "publish".

It is a digital release, so head to your favorite electro-store for electro-pop.

"Say My Name" by KNGDAVD

KNGDAVD is a collaboration of New York duo Tye James and Jon Buscema.   Their first release is the gritty, extravagantly swaggering "Say My Name. I don't have any more information, but they dropped this delicious nugget in my inbox and it seems like an excellent way to cap off the evening.

"Sweet Company" by Inspired and the Sleep

Here is the perfect song to end a summer day.  Tomorrow morning I'm going to experiment and determine whether it is the perfect way to start a new summer day.  I strongly suspect that it will be.

The song is "Sweet Company", an ode to emphasizing good times and fond memories, and not dwelling on the negative debris.  Seems like a fine aspiration to us, and it is a great tune.  You know what else is great?  It is available as a "Name your price' download at this Bandcamp link.

"Sweet Company" is the work of San Diego outfit Inspired and the Sleep.  The band is Max Greenhalgh (bass/vocals/keys/arrangements/mixing), Bryce Outcault (guitar), and Andrew Satterlee (drums).  It isn't their first time here, and I suspect it won't be the last.

"Amnesia" by Bloom Twins

Feast your ears on the dark pop of Bloom Twins.  Nineteen-years-old Sonia and Anna Kuprienko are, indeed, identical twins, originally from the Ukraine and now living in London.  Their music is attracting attention, and it seems to us that it is for the right reasons.  Here is their latest single, taken from their first album which will follow later this year.

"Guru" by Coast Modern

Coast Modern is a Los Angeles duo comprised of Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas, and we think they are about to make their way into a lot of summer playlists.  Their latest offering is the dancehall inspired ready-for-the-beach jam "Guru".  We also have included previously released "Hollow Life" and "Animals" to demonstrate that these guys have a full arsenal of sounds.  The guys played SXSW in March and are spending much of the rest of the year on the road.  The Bumbershoot appearance may get me to venture to Seattle Center on September 2.

Death and Vanilla reissues

About a year ago Swedish electro-pop band Death and Vanilla reminded us how very good they are with To Where The Wild Things Are (our feature here).  The talented Maleen Nilsson and Anders Hansson craft sonic wonders with elements of psychedelic pop, baroque pop and minimalist experimentation.  Their work has been compared to Broadcast and Sterolab, but really is too broad in scope for such references to be more than starting points.  The duo loves vintage instruments and horror film music, both of which inform their recording, adding depth and tension to the sweet and bright elements common to electro-pop.

Before To Where The Wild Things Are Death and Vanilla had released a self-titled EP, a self-titled LP, and a two-song single titled "From Above".  Those early works are as excellent as they are hard to find, so listeners who only became fans last year have been unable to get their full dose of D&V.  However Fire Records is in the business of providing happy endings, and has now released all three of those earlier records.  Feast your ears on the sampler of cuts from the reissues below, and then stock your musical cupboard with Death and Vanilla.

"Tryst" by Djustin

We recently featured the first single from the upcoming debut LP by translantic electronic duo Djustin.  Consisting of Sweden's Johan AngergÃ¥rd and Detroit's Rose Suau, they create soaring, romantically shaded melodies for the dance floor.  You now can hear "Tryst", the second song from the EP.  Exciting stuff, and you can see why Johan AngergÃ¥rd, the label boss at Labrador Records, was happy to sign  Johan AngergÃ¥rd and Rose Suau to his lable.

Philco Fiction - Talk/Brag

Talk/Brag is an album of ambition, with songs that touch on the interior/spiritual and the dance floor, with neo soul and gospel elements adorning a platform constructed with bountiful bass and flashes of horns.  If you are an electro-pop fan, this is going to be one of your most welcome releases of the new year.  But even if you aren't ordinarily drawn to the genre, I think you will find Talk/Brag to be a very rewarding record.

The album is the creation of Philco Fiction, the Oslo Norway duo of Turid Alida Solberg and Andreas Lønmo Knudsrød.  Our first introduction was via showcase song "Runimals" - a soulful triumph that any band would be happy to leave as their aural calling card.  The title track is an playful and appealing pop song that translates well to the dance floor.  "Bodies" merges R&B with '80s synth pop.  But those are just a few of the highlights.  For example, "Hold Your Breath" is a sleek and slinky gem that could be a single.  Talk/Brag is both smooth as polished steel and burning with emotion.  Dance the night away!

Talk/Brag is out today via Killing Moon Records.
