The year was 1965 and everyone was in love with the Beatles and the British Invasion. In Dallas, a band merged that sound with traditional Mexican conjunto and created one of the great garage rock classics, "Wooly Bully". It had a great many magical moments in its 2:21, starting with its legendary count off: "Uno, dos / one, two, tres, quatro." I saw Sam the Sham at Stepan Center (I think December's Children opened for them). Everyone one was wearing orange. The 15 year old Frank was enamored by the shimmying of the Pharrettes - three Hispanic women bedecked in platinum colored wigs shimmying in the shortest orange mini-skirts I had seen. This was the definition of exotic in '66 South Bend.
