"This Is Our Life" by Nina Winder-Lind

We were not previously familiar with Nina Winder-Lind or The New Eaves, the band of which she is a member. But we are quite taken with her new single "This Is Our Life". The song begins with restraint. But as it nears the first minute it opens up into a rousing folk pop romp. Coupled with an appealing video, we needed to play it through a half-dozen times to jump start our day. We will be looking forward to more gems from this Brighton-based Swede.

"Ruby" and "Somebody's Daughter" by Yea-Ming & The Rumours

Yea-Ming and The Rumours contemplate the false image of full contentment with "Ruby" and treat us to a look back at innocence of "Somebody's Daughter". Those are just two of the joys that await us on May 23 when new album I Can't Have It All is released via Dandy Boy Records.

No, we can't have it all, but sometimes we can have great music.

"Come Here" by Kath Bloom

Kath Bloom is a singer songwriter and folk musician who may be better known among musicians than the general public. But with a career that spans the late '70s to present day, she clearly is a musician worth our ears. Bloom has collaborated with other artists and her work has been covered by Mark Kozelek, Bill Callahan and others.

So, how do you get access to this fine artist's music?  Glad you asked -- Melbourne label Chapter Music is stepping up to deliver the goods. In September, Chapter will release Finally, the first ever vinyl reissue of Bloom's 1990 recording (the music previously was released in CD format in 2005). Finally was compiled from previous recordings which were out of print or otherwise not widely distributed or available. The first single from the reissue is "Come Here", which may well be Bloom's signature tune. Breathtakingly beautiful, it reminds us that Kath Bloom can pluck our heartstrings as easily as the strings on her acoustic guitar.

"Inside Every Mountain Is A Heart" by The Paperback Throne

The Paperback Throne is Ralph and Sylvia Hector. It appears that they are active with a community of other creatives and participate in projects with various combinations of artists. But they also release music as The Paperback Throne. And under that name they just released "Inside Every Mountain Is A Heart". A grand orchestral pop tune as heartfelt as the title would suggest, it is the centerpiece of the upcoming album Waves. The B-side is "Arms Around You", a folky tune about comforting your loved one. I actually needed these tracks today as my wife crashed on our bike ride and I just got back from the ICU. she is likely to be fine, but it is a reminder to pay attention to what is important and your loved ones, because it all can disappear fast.

The single is available as of October 21. Waves will be released on October 28 via Iffy Folk Records.

The Sweetheart Revue - Good News, Bad News

Not all albums live up to their names, but Good News, Bad News is not just any album. The band is Glasgow's The Sweetheart Revue, headed by singer-songwriter-guitarist Gerard Sampaio, who is joined by Jack Cocker (guitar/vocals), Liam McArdle (bass), Heather Phillips (violin/vocals), Moshe Price (drums), and Jen McKee (cello/accordion/piano/vocals). They have been together since 2007, but recording Good News, Bad News presented two special challenges: Recording an album during a pandemic with several associated lockdowns; and Gerald's inoperable brain tumor. Not surprisingly, the latter challenge provides the "bad news" portion of the proceedings, addressed in several songs with an admirably positive outlook. However, the album contains good news songs as well. But whether delivering good news or bad news, the songwriting and performances are top shelf. Rarely do we encounter an album with this level of humanity and connectedness, and we treasure it. We encourage you to do so as well.

In addition to the members listed above, additional assistance was provided by Tim Davidson (pedal steel guitar), Jamie Houston (keys), J.P. Berrie (horns) Gordon Kyle (horns).

Good News, Bad News is out now in digital, vinyl and CD formats via Last Night From Glasgow.

Jazmine Mary - The Licking Of A Tangerine

Some days are fast, and some days are slow. Due to a current (and, I hope, temporary) injury, this Sunday is a slow day. Thus, it is a perfect time to brew my best coffee beans, settle in near the fireplace, and cue up some music appropriate for the moment. The selected album is The Licking Of A Tangerine, a February release by Jazmine Mary. The project of New Zealand-based Australian singer-songwriter Jazmine Rose Phillips who formerly performed as Him, she crafts enchanting and somewhat darkly-shaded songs that combine folk and dream pop sensibilities. Her voice is remarkable and dynamic, and her delivery is impeccable. The songs unspool leisurely at, well, a perfect Sunday morning pace.  All in all, a fine debut album that is starting our day on good notes, and we are interested in what Jazmine Mary may have for us in the future.

"Heartbeats of my Son" by Dawn-Song

Dawn-Song is musician Nick Evans. His latest work is For Morgan, and it will be released later this month. The album consists of songs he has written and recorded in recent years, some of which are collaborations with other artists. I think that Nick's own description of his motivation for recording the songs is more poignant that anything I could write, so here it is:

I made an album of my songs with some wonderful collaborators over the last couple of years.
When I’m gone I wanted to continue to be able to sing for my son Morgan if he needed me.
My father published a small book of poetry before he died and if I’m missing him a lot I read a bit of it and I feel reconnected.

The video below is for album track "Heartbeats Of A Son" and is intended to depict Nick's young song experiencing his new world through his own eyes.

For Morgan is due May 28 via Ffynnone Recordings and can be steamed and ordered at the Bandcamp link below.

Gracious Losers - Six Roads Ends

Normally a nine-piece band, Glasgow's Gracious Losers bucked the pandemic trend for stripped-down set ups and assembled 15 players to record their second album, Six Roads Ends. Comprised of worthy musicians from other groups, Gracious Losers cross genre boundaries and blend Celtic folk, folk rock, psychedelia, country, pop, and Americana. And with 11 tracks, the album gives the listener a taste of all of those. Moreover, the tracks include a versatile offering of restrained but powerful songs for a quiet, rousing stomps appropriate to get the entire audience dancing and singing along and a few that are in-between. The sound of The Gracious Losers evinces sincerity and warmth and is sufficiently distinctive that we would be hard-pressed to find it elsewhere. But why would you look, when it is all right there on Six Roads Ends.

The regular members of the band are songwriter Jonathan Lilley, joined by Amanda McKeown, Gary Johnston, Heather Philips, Rory McGregor, Monica Queen, Johnny Smillie, Celia Garcia, and Erik Igelstrom. Six Roads Ends is out now in digital, vinyl and CD formats via Last Night From Glasgow.

"Somewhere New" by Melby

Swedish quartet Melby has proven their chops with strong records based on pop and folk elements. But one of the band's best qualities is their willingness to expand their sound into new territory. This week brought us "Somewhere New". Thrillingly dynamic and embellished with psychedelic flourishes, it displays the resolve and talent of a band with ambition and a high ceiling.

Melby are Matilda Wiezell (vocals), Are Engen Steinsholm (back-up vocals, guitar), David Jehrlander (bass) and Teo Jernkvist (drums). "Somewhere New" is out now via Stockholm's Rama Lama Records.

Raveloe - Notes and Dreams

This music may not be for everyone. If you don't like beautiful folk-accented melodies, impeccably crafted and sung, well, you might want to turn your ears elsewhere. But for everyone else, we suggest that Notes and Dreams is an EP that you will want. Indeed, that you need. The creation of Glasgow's Kim Grant under the name Raveloe (named after a town in George Eliot's Silas Marner) and a few collaborators from far and wide, it consists of five tracks created during the pandemic lockdown. Proving herself an accomplished wordsmith as well as an excellent musician, each of Grant's songs are a hushed but powerful burst of light. We expect more good things from Raveloe in the future, but for now this EP really hits the spot.

Notes and Dreams is out now in digital and CD formats via Glasgow's Olive Grove Records.

On this record Kim sings and plays the guitar, synth, and bass, and Jacob Tomlinson plays the drums. Izzy Rose plays bass on "Post It" and "Steady". Jen Anthan provides the strings for "Old Tree". Erin F. Watt plays the piano for "Post It".

"New Moon" and "Why Don't You Come Out Anymore?" by The Natvral

Fans of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart will be thrilled to know that Kip Berman -- songwriter and frontman for that band -- has a solo project called The Natvral (well, did you expect a straightforward name?). Its debut album, tilted Tethers, will be released on April 2 via Kanine Records. The album reflects Berman's new groundedness as a father in a young family, and the tension between the comforts of home and the desire to go out and participate in the broader world.

So far, The Natvral has released two singles from the album. The latest is the folky "New Moon", while the first, "Why Don't You Come Out Anymore?", demonstrates that Berman hasn't lost his knack for infectious guitar pop. Enjoy both below.

"Loath to Leave" by The Gracious Losers

Today we introduce you to Scottish folk rock band called The Gracious Losers. In fact, they are a supergroup comprised of members of Sister John, Thrum, God Help the Girl, The Parsonage, Sporting Hero, and Berie Big Band. As you might expect, the assembly of that much talent from various spots in the musical spectrum results in a sound that reflects psychedelic, Americana, Celtic, folk, and pop. In fact, the introductory single, "Loath to Leave", falls into the moody, atmospheric pop category. We think is displays range, nuance and talent, and look forward to more from The Gracious Losers. And speaking of more, the band's full album Six Roads Ends is due in digital, CD and vinyl formats March 26 via Last Night From Glasgow.

Josephine Foster - No Harm Done

No Harm Done is a bit outside of our usual lane. But this eight-track musical exploration of love and yearning is utterly enchanting. Written by Josephine Foster and performed by Foster and guitarist Matthew Schneider, this is a spellbinding and utterly captivating record, highlighted by effortlessly melodic, slow-burning compositions and Foster's pristine mezzo-soprano. The vibe recalls old vinyl recordings from many decades ago, like a soundtrack for a black and white movie from the archives. We heartily encourage you to test a few songs below and consider going to Bandcamp an losing yourself in Foster's spell.

No Harm Done is out now in digital, vinyl and CD formats via Fire Records.

Blake - HMS Blake

English musician Julian Pugsley, aka Blake, is a Swiss Army Knife kind of pop artist. Looking for jangling singer-songwriter tunes -- you will find them here. Want some boogie blues rock -- he has you covered. But he doesn't stop there. His new collection of songs, HMS Blake, includes alt rock and folk songs as well. We term the album a collection because it is a two disc release including 1971, his album from earlier this year, six new songs, and a career retrospective of earlier releases. So in addition to remarkable variety, the album is consists of a very generous 40 songs. You have to play HMS Blake through from start to finish to truly appreciate what it can do for you. It is like finding a top quality indie station playing guitar pop and rock inspired by the best influences of the past five decades. That it is all written and performed by Pugsley is even more incredible, of course.

The album is available now in CD and digital formats via Subjangle Records.

Night Heron - I Heard You Dreaming

One of the more stunning listening experiences we have had lately is listening to I Heard You Dreaming. The songs are the creation of Michael Telles, aka Night Heron, who is a teacher in Massachusettes. Michael has an extensive catalog of music, but this special release includes 13 of his favorites plus five songs recorded for this album. The sound is an artful concoction of folk, dream pop and jangle pop, washed in reverb and accented by acoustic guitar and wistful vocals. Some songs may bring to mind Elliott Smith, others Nick Drake or the Pernice Brothers. The music is absolutely gorgeous, and while it is a fine album for any time of day in any season of the year, it is perfect for your quiet summer nights.

The album is out now in digital and CD formats via Subjangle Records.

Nicol & Elliott - My Heart Will Wait EP

One of the labels we have been happy to champion is Last Night From Glasgow. Recently LNFG advised us that they had launched a subsidiary label, Hive. One of Hive's first releases is the special little gem My Heart Will Wait, by Nicol & Elliott. The project was born of a temporary pairing of Andrew Nicol and Rachel Elliott for a performance in early 2018. But preparations for that performance led to the formation of Nicol & Elliott. The songwriting duo's inspiration runs to Americana, indie pop, and country folk, with a shading of Gothic darkness. Their talents are on display in fine fashion on My Heart Will Wait EP. Take the first two tracks for a test drive below, then check your usual digital sources for the EP.

In addition to Rachel (violin/piano/vocals) and Andrew (guitar/vocals), Nicol & Elliott are John Houston (bass), Ryan Wilson (drums), Andy Lucas (piano), and Tim Davidson (pedal steel).

Siv Jakobsen - Fight or Flight

Siv Jacobsen's voice is delicate and pure, but her songs have a quiet, unwavering power and sense of purpose. The Oslo, Norway artist has just released the two song digital single Fight or Flight, consisting of the title tracks and "Only Life".  "Fight or Flight" is a sparkling contemplation on the meaning of lifetime commitment and enduring love. We find it a peacefully perfect way to end our day. Time to give the spouse a kiss and turn out the lights. Well, maybe we will listen just one more time.

Siv's next album, A Temporary Soothing, is scheduled for release in August.

The Hanging Stars - A New Kind Of Sky

Cue up A New Kind Of Sky, close your eyes and listen to terrific country garage psych/pop, or, if you prefer a more concise phrase, cosmic country rock. You may feel transported to California or Austin in the '70s. You may envision cool desert nights and warm breezes under sunny skies. Well, we don't relish spoiling any good daydreams, but this tasty album is the work of London band The Hanging Stars. While the songs represent a triumph of the songwriting craft, the sincere and nuanced performances elevate each one to true gem status. Infused with humanity and carried by melody and harmony, this is an album you will turn to again and again.

The Hanging Stars are Richard Olson (vocals/guitar), Sam Ferman (bass), Paulie Cobra (drums), Patrick Ralla (guitar/keys/vocals), and Joe Harvey-Whyte (pedal steel). A New Kind Of Sky is out now in digital and vinyl formats.

The Cupholders - The Cupholders Present The Wisconsin Polka!

A song, a place, a state of mind: Welcome to the world of "The Wisconsin Polka". The song was written by Wisconsin (Racine) native, and one-third of Seattle's The Cupholders, Bart Cameron for his other band, The Foghorns. With references to love, lust, aging, tough driving and cold - bitter cold - and set to a Polka rhythm, it is a pithy and warmly drawn musical poem and tribute to both Bart's home state and the state of life unspooling. The song takes on legendary stature in The Cupholders' new mini-album, The Cupholders Present The Wisconsin Polka!. Beginning with a snippet of the state song (I was required to learn the words myself as a grade school student in Wisconsin), the album presents The Foghorn's punky polka version as the "Racine" version, then follows it with a rendition of the song by Cupholder Casey Ruff with Joy Mills. Labeled the "Montana" version after Casey's home state, it is an folky, acoustic take. Apparently they don't polka in Montana, but they do perform good songs well.

Next up is the soul/garage (but still Polka) "Kenosha"version voiced by Cupholder Sam Russell, a native of Kenosha, Wisconsin. The following Drexel Hill Version is by guest Jon Rooney/Virgin of the Birds (a Pennsylvania native), who offers an affecting indie pop interpretation as well as creating the album art. Then we get an all hands "Ballard" version, presumably named after the Seattle neighborhood that hosted the album release party. The album closes with an immensely interesting last minute treat - a dreamy, shape-shifting version by autOudiO (Paul Beaudry).

And what do you do when you have heard six versions of The Wisconsin Polka back to back? You cue it up and play it again. It is that good.

Sweet Whirl - Love Songs & Poetry

Sweet Whirl is the musical platform for Melbourne musician Esther Edquist.  After a couple of releases on the Bedroom Suck with her former band Superstar (which we featured in 2015: link), Esther has marked her signing with Chapter Music by releasing a six-song EP titled Love Songs & Poetry.  The songs are introspective and incisive, written with intelligence and played with confidence.  The arrangements are pleasingly melodic and leave ample space for Esther's vocals and bass to star.  Love Songs & Poetry is a perfect play for the evening of a summer day.  And it is just what we are playing every night this week.

In addition to Esther, Sweet Whirl includes James Vinciguerra and Liam Barton.  Love Songs & Poetry is out now in digital and cassette formats via Melbourne's Chapter Music.
