Old Stuff: Rockabilly Punk

The roots of punk may have been in the outlaw fringes of rockabilly. Outsiders' music celebrating the guys and gals who drove and lived fast and didn't care too much for authority. While the nice kids listened to Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson, the pre-punks listened to this stuff. Stuff with serious attitude. If you like this, let me know and we may have a second rockabilly punk edition on another Friday.

Ronnie Dawson, "Rockin' Bones":

Most radio stations in the late '50s wouldn't play John & Jackie singing "Little Girl":

Hank Mizell recorded "Jungle Rock" in 1959. Oddly, it was a hit for him in the UK in 1976:

Jackie Morningstar gave us "Rockin' in the Graveyard":

"Rumble" by Link Wray was a instrumental, but it just sounds bad, in a very good way.

"Domino" was a Roy Orbison recording for Sun Records:

Good girls in the '50s didn't belt out "I Need A Man", did they? Well, Barbara Pittman did just that for Sun Records:

  1. RS74: Great stuff, more please.
Speaking of rockabilly, I showed my 11 yr old daughters a vintage video of a live Wanda Jackson performance from the 50's. Their jaws hit the ground. The context was that Wanda is opening for my daughters' favorite singer Adele here soon. The wheel keeps on turning....
