Monnone Alone - Do It Twice

One of the best, upbeat and straightforward rock and roll songs we've heard lately is "Do It Twice".  We wouldn't have been surprised to find it on a long lost album by a criminally overlooked California band, but in fact it is the title track of a two song single by Australian band Monnone Alone.  The other track is the lower key but delightful "The Sea and the City".  In case you are wondering, the "Monnone" of Monnone Alone is Mark Monnone, of Aussie legends The Lucksmiths.  Mark has been carving out a deservedly well-regarded solo career, of which this is an excellent example.  The songcraft and performances are excellent and we commend it to any fan of guitar pop.

Sadly, we must report that Mark has engaged in false advertising.  In addition to Mark providing vocals and guitar, Monnone Alone includes Gus Franklin (drums/backing vocals), Joe Foley (bass/backing vocals), and Louis Richter (12-string guitar).  So, Monnone is not really alone after all.

Note that the links below allow you to obtain the single from the source local to you, with choices in the US, Australia, Spain, and Finland.

Carlton Jumel Smith - 1634 Lexington Avenue

We decided at a very young age that weekends are made for R&B and soul, so we will suggest to you that your weekend will not be complete without 1634 Lexington Avenue.  The creation of New York City's Carlton Jumel Smith, and named for his childhood address, the album is nothing less than a note-perfect celebration of classic R&B sounds, one of the most beloved and enduring genres of pop music.  Working with backing band Cold Diamond & Mink, the house band and production crew at Timmion Records, the Helsinki soul label releasing this album, Smith transports us to neon-lit urban streets and romantic encounters.  It is a world of swagger, promise and romance, accented with deep, satisfying grooves, horns, and backing vocals.  Of course, the star is Smith, whose tone, phrasing and passion bring to mind favorable comparisons with past greats Al Green, James Brown, Otis Redding, and Curtis Mayfield.  This album may have a permanent spot on the WYMA playlist.

1634 Lexington Avenue is out today in digital, vinyl and CD formats.  And a backing band this good deserves specific mention: Seppo Salmi (band leader/guitar/organ) Sami Kantelinen (bass), Jukka Sarapaa (drums), Jukka Eskola (arranger/trumpet), Pope Puolitaival (baritone sax), Jimi Tenor (sax), Janne Auvinen (congas), and Tuomo Prattala (organ/piano/backing vocals).

"Fetch You Roses" by Sail By Summer

One of our favorite new bands is Scandinavia's Sail By Summer, and not only because we are fans of sailing and summer.  Earlier this year we brought you their shimmering "Facing Dullness".  As we inch towards the August release of the project's debut album, we are presented with "Fetch You Roses", the band's new single.  Melancholy but beautiful, and thoughtfully detailed, it is a highly recommended listen.

Sail By Summer are Norway's William Hut (vocals/guitar) and Denmark's Jens Kristian (keys)."Fetch You Roses" is out today as a digital release via Apollon Records.

"Winter In The Dark" by Jeanines

One of the jangle pop delights of the early summer, and a candidate to be the jangle pop album of the entire season, will be Jeanines' self-titled debut.  And while it is not yet time to discuss the delights that await all of us, it is the perfect time to bring you the Brooklyn band's new single from the album.  "Winter In The Dark" is an intriguing burst of jangle and melancholy energy, pulling the listener into the shady swirl and then quickly releasing us again.

Jeanines are Alicia Jeanine (guitar/vocals) and Jed Smith (drums/bass).  The album will be released via Slumberland Records.

ALASKALASKA - The Dots

Sophisticated, adventurous, and a bit weird, South Londoners ALASKALASKA have created a top class melange of art pop on their new album The Dots.  With substantial grooves, jazz fusion, layers of textures, and a good dose of horns, the band gives the listener a 12-course musical feast.  This album likely will not remind you of anything else on your playlist, and quiet frankly, a lot of what is on your playlist may seem a bit plain in comparison.  Don't blame us, blame ALASKALASKA.  Then thank them.

ALASKALASKA are Lucinda John-Duarte, Fraser Rieley, Calum Duncan, Fraser Smith, and Gethin Jones.  The Dots is out now via Marathon Artists.

"That's Not Me" by Trudy and the Romance

Focusing on vocals and melody, Liverpool's Trudy and the Romance stroll into our lives like a welcome fresh breeze.  "That's Not Me" is the third single from debut album, Sandman, which will be released on May 24.  Yes, it is a break up song, but it builds beautifully and soothes the soul none the less.

"Rocko's Theme" by Cat Princess

Some bands enter the room shyly, hoping for some positive notice. Sweden's Cat Princess in not one of those bands.  Preferring to strut in with the brashness of, say, a '00s-era Franz Ferdinand and a love of the dance floor.  Their debut album Forbidden Items comes next week, but today we celebrate "Rocko's Theme", the final single.  It seems to us to be the perfect mix of art pop, glam, and gritty guitar pop, with a Memphis rhythm section.

Forbidden Items will be released via Rama Lama Records.

John Girgus and The Legendary House Cats - Act Two

John Girgus and The Legendary House Cats are John Girgus (vocals/guitar/synths), Jim Rivas (drums/tambourine), and Chris McRitchie (bass).  John was a founder of the late, beloved Aberdeen, but he now devotes his musical energy to TLHC.  And that is fine with us, as we eagerly await each release from this project.

Their latest effort is a two song single titled Act Two.  The title track is nearly four minutes of The Jesus and Mary Chain meets New Order meets Red Sleeping Beauty goodness, and the b-side continues the joy with an acoustic remix of "Act Two".  Relaxing and uplifting, these songs will supercharge you every time you play them.

Act Two is out now as a digital download.  See the Bandcamp link below.
