Will Johnson: "Just to Know What You've Been Dreaming"
Man, can he sing... as much as I love the feedback-drenched crunch rock and non-sequitirs of Centro-matic, I don't think there's anyone's acoustic music I enjoy as much as Will Johnson's. He has really written some beautiful music.

Old Stuff Friday: Prog Rock Edition
Jethro Tull, "Bouree"... from my favorite Jethro Tull album, Stand Up
Traffic, "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"... hard to name a favorite Traffic album, they were all so good.
Pink Floyd, "Welcome to the Machine"... is this the pinnacle of prog rock?
Yes, "Yours Is No Disgrace"... or maybe this is.

Old Stuff Friday: All 70's, All Hair
Hope you like hair with your music...
Tom Petty & Heartbreakers: "Listen to Her Heart"... the first song of theirs I remember hearing, still one of my favorites and you gotta love that Byrds sound:
Earth Wind & Fire: "September"
Boston, "More Than a Feeling"
Don't like Boston? Well, then I guess you won't put any Boston videos on your blog...

Karl Blau: "Dark Sedan"
I like this guy's music. Heard a song on a KEXP podcast and it grew on me over a couple of listens... I can't imagine it's everyone's cup of tea, but it's good prog-rock and he's clearly having a lot of fun with it.
Mogwai: Special Moves
They've released a live cd and announced they're signing with Sub Pop in the US, working on a new studio album for 2011. Special Moves available at their website:

The Asteroid #4: "Here We Go"
I'm a sucker for psych/pop. In case you couldn't tell... Seems like I had this song at one time, maybe it was on a Rainbow Quartz comp disc. Rainbow Quartz is a really good label, a pretty dependable source of psychedelic guitar pop.

Centro-matic/South San Gabriel: Eyas
New EP, available at centro-matic.com... "Buy the whole set" link takes you to the Centro-matic web store. If you're unfamiliar with them, I'd recommend starting with Love You Just the Same and All The Falsest Hearts Can Try. But it's all great.

Old Stuff Friday: Blues Edition
Saving the best for last...
Sonny Boy Williamson, "Keep It To Yourself"
Led Zeppelin, "Bring It On Home"
Jimi Hendrix, "Red House"
Howlin' Wolf, "Smokestack Lightning"
Sam Phillips, on his first meeting with Howlin' Wolf, was bowled over. "When I heard him, I said, 'This is for me. This is where the soul of man never dies'. He was about six foot six, with the biggest feet I've ever seen on a human being. Big Foot Chester is one name they used to call him. He would sit there with those feet planted wide apart, playing nothing but the French harp, and I tell you, the greatest show you could see today would be Chester Burnett doing one of those sessions in my studio. God, what would it be worth to see the fervor in that man's face when he sang. His eyes would light up and you'd see the veins on his neck, and buddy, there was nothing on his mind but that song. He sang with his damn soul."

Boston Spaceships: "Fly Away (Terry Sez)"
From Our Cubehouse Still Rocks. Did you know that came out this week?
I Was a King: "Norman Bleik"
This is one of my favorite things I've heard this year. Norwegian band, the title's a tribute to Teenage Fanclub and they do it right. Here's a nice live video, look for the song online and check out the whole album... Highly recommended.

Roxy Music: "Dance Away"
For some reason, that Best Coast song reminded me of this Roxy Music song...
Best Coast: "When I'm With You"
Really well-done surf pop, at least I like it. Wonder if McDonald's knows about this video? Maybe he's the clown from McDowell's...

Black Keys: "10AM Automatic"
Still my favorite Black Keys song... To see them perform this live is to be amazed.

Beloved Rogue: "Daysleeping"
Brooklyn band, looks like they've just released an EP so far... check em out at www.belovedrogue.com. I really like their sound... Heard this on NPR Second Stage podcast.
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band: "Albatross, Albatross"
I like these guys a lot, so far. Their new album sounds better to me than the last one (released less than a year ago, another good sign).
This video is for "Albatross, Albatross" from last year's self-titled album... Also check out their new album Where the Messengers Meet, I've been enjoying the song "Leaving Trails".

Asteroid: "Time"
Can't remember where I got the tip on these guys, somebody on Rate Your Music compared them to someone I like, so here you are... Swedish stoner rock... a bright line if there ever was one. Their 2010 album is called Asteroid II, which brings back fond memories of other imaginative bands who called their second album II: Meat Puppets, Led Zeppelin... okay, there weren't that many, were there?
Guided by Voices: "Glad Girls" and Circus Devils: "The Girls Will Make It Happen"
Just your basic genius guitar-driven rock song... sometimes the Four P's are out of balance, and it's almost all Pop.
And sometimes, the Psych side takes over... and you get Circus Devils.
